How to choose the right phone holder for your car

Vent, dash or windscreen? Magnet or clamp? A simple guide to picking a phone holder that stays put and keeps your phone at a safe glance.

Pick where it mounts first

Phone holders attach in three main ways, and your car usually decides which works best. Vent mounts clip onto an air vent slat β€” easy to move between cars but they need sturdy, horizontal vents. Dash mounts stick or suction onto a flat spot on the dashboard. Windscreen suction mounts sit high and close to your eyeline, but check they don't block your view of the road.

Grip style: clamp, magnet or cradle

Clamp-style holders squeeze the phone's sides and fit almost any phone, even with a chunky case. Magnetic holders are the quickest to use one-handed, but need a metal plate on the phone or case. Full cradles hold the phone bottom and sides and are the most secure on rough roads.

  • Lots of bumps or unsealed roads? Choose a cradle or strong clamp.
  • In and out of the car all day? A magnet mount is fastest.
  • Big phone with a thick case? Check the clamp's maximum width.

Small details that matter

Look for one-hand operation so you can dock the phone without looking away, a ball joint so you can angle the screen away from sun glare, and a design that leaves the charging port free. If you use your phone for maps daily, a holder with built-in charging can be worth it.
